In the beginning, counseling typically occurs once a week to gain momentum on the path of change. Sessions occur less frequently as the intensity of the presenting problem decreases.

Insurance

To ensure privacy, some people don't use insurance since it requires a mental health diagnosis and insurers may seek personal details about your problems.

Such information may become part of your permanent medical record and can affect future employment, disability insurance, or security clearance.

Furthermore, children who receive a mental health diagnosis may be denied access to certain educational programs or denied future participation to law enforcement or military service.

Paying for the session yourself allows for quality counseling services and offers confidentiality without intrusive managed care requirements.

If you choose to use insurance, our licensed providers are in-network with the following:

  • Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield insurance and EAP (We are not in-network with Anthem HIP)

  • CareSource Marketplace

  • IU Health and IU EAP

  • Tricare (Authorized Non-Network)

  • UMR

  • United

Insurance Coverage for Couple and Family Therapy

If you want to use your insurance, we have to assess if you are experiencing distress that is significant enough to meet the criteria for a mental health diagnosis and that couples/family therapy is necessary to improve your symptoms related to the diagnosis. Based on the assessment, your insurance will then determine if couple/family counseling in combination with the diagnosis is covered by your specific plan.

As a heads up, our assessment process for couples is a 3-part process - Initial appointment with the couple followed by individual sessions with each partner, which means it typically takes a few sessions to see if your insurance company determines such services are covered.

**Please note that benefits are an agreement between you and your insurance company. We cannot guarantee any insurance coverage or reimbursement. If you have eligibility concerns or questions, you should contact your insurance provider directly.

Using out-of-network insurance benefits with our providers

In some cases we are able to verify your out-of-network benefits. However, we also encourage you to check your insurance plan to determine if there is an out-of-network deductible and what percentage of our service fee may be covered. Also, we are able to submit claims to most insurance companies following your session so you may receive reimbursement from your plan.

Consent for Child and Teen Counseling

In cases involving children of divorced parents or those under the care of a legal guardian, we require documentation verifying that the consenting adult has legal authority to approve the child’s treatment. This documentation must be provided before services can begin. Examples of such documentation include a copy of the divorce decree or custody agreement specifying decision-making authority for medical or mental health care, as well as legal guardianship papers.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • You can expect our counselors to take the time to get to know you and your particular situation. This helps your counselor understand how to best help you so your goals can be achieved. Counseling is a collaborative process where the counselor works with you to facilitate change while respecting your values and beliefs.

  • In the beginning, therapy typically occurs on a weekly basis to gain momentum on fixing the problem. Once the intensity of your problem is reduced, as determined by both you and your therapist, session frequency can begin to lessen. The duration of therapy is determined by a variety of factors, including the type and severity of the presenting problem and response to treatment. Therapy can last as long as needed to reduce or eliminate the problem, which can range from a few sessions to years.

  • Research shows that one of the most important factors affecting a client’s response to counseling is the relationship between the therapist and the client. If you don’t feel safe or understood then you probably won't benefit as greatly from counseling.

In addition, prior counseling may not have been helpful if you felt your expectations were not met. It is important to discuss your expectations with your therapist early on and be honest with him or her over the course of therapy about whether or not you feel your expectations are being met.

  • At first glance it can be easy to think that MFTs only treat married couples and families. The truth is that while MFTs are uniquely trained and skilled at working with a variety of relationships, they also work with non-married couples and individuals. What is unique to MFT training is that we take a closer look at how family relationships influence mental health. On a broader level, this includes examining how relationships with work, health, religion and culture influence the problem.

  • Frequently insurance will cover a significant portion of the cost of therapy. However, every insurance plan is different and trying to determine exactly what your plan will cover can be complicated. We will be happy to help you determine your insurance benefits. At this time, our therapists are in-network with some insurance companies. We are also able to bill out-of-network and offer reduced rates.

  • Medication for the treatment of psychological problems is not a provided service at this office; however, we can collaborate with your physician or psychiatrist to provide more well-rounded care.
