Trauma.
It’s complicated.
It looks and feels differently to different people. Maybe you’ve experienced a life-changing traumatic event. Or perhaps you’ve experienced a challenging event that you don’t consider a “trauma,” but it’s left you with highly uncomfortable and life-disrupting thoughts and feelings.
The bottom line is this: defining what a trauma is for you isn’t black and white. At Life Enrichment Counseling, we aren’t here to judge whether something you experienced was a trauma or not. If it was traumatic for you and you’re having trouble handling the challenging emotions accompanying it, that’s enough for us.
We’re here for you, and we’ll meet you wherever you are. Our trauma therapists can help you work through the messy, debilitating symptoms you're dealing with through patient, understanding, and compassionate trauma therapy in Indianapolis.
How Trauma May Be Impacting Your Life
Sometimes, when you’re in the thick of the challenging emotions trauma causes, it’s tough to pinpoint precisely how it’s affecting you. It can often feel like an imposing figure, always looming, wreaking havoc on your behaviors, thoughts, and feelings.
In reality, trauma affects your sense of self and causes you to feel unsafe with much of the world around you.
It can affect your relationships, how you handle stressful situations, and how you process emotions. Some of the symptoms of trauma include, but are not limited to:
flashbacks, intrusive thoughts, or nightmares
avoiding people, places, or situations that remind you of the trauma
difficulty concentrating when triggered
fear or worry about feeling safe
strong reactions to relationship challenges
negative self-talk
anger or irritability
feeling numb
changes in sleep patterns
chronic pain or illness
substance abuse
difficulty setting healthy boundaries
Experiencing trauma can create a new “norm” in your life. It can lead to you tolerating more unhealthy things than you probably should.
Counseling for trauma can help you understand that new norm and open your eyes to how trauma is showing up in your life.
And then, when you’re ready and feel safe to do so, we’ll work with you to create a new, healthier path out of your symptoms and into a more fulfilling life, free from the oppression of trauma.
How We Can Help
Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) often go hand in hand. But that’s not always the case. Whatever you’ve experienced has got a hold on your body and mind, whether you’re experiencing PTSD or not.
Our experienced trauma therapists will walk beside you every step of the way and will always work at a pace that is comfortable for you.
Based on your individual needs, we’ll make sure we take the right approach to helping you work through the complicated emotions trauma has brought to your life. Whatever approach we take, we’ll help you get back into the driver’s seat of your life and stop trauma from controlling your body and mind.
In our trauma therapy sessions, our therapists will gently help you:
examine the ways trauma shows up in all aspects of your life
explore your thoughts and behaviors to discover what you do to create safety
determine how the trauma affects your relationships
find more ways to feel safe
learn new tools and ways of coping so you can effectively combat challenges when triggered
Approaches Used in Trauma Therapy at Life Enrichment Counseling
First off, we’ll make sure you feel safe and ready to work through your trauma and how it affects you. You decide the pace, not us. When you’re ready, we’ll use one or more of the following approaches:
Psychodynamic Therapy for Trauma
This approach to treating trauma focuses on exploring how your subconscious thoughts, feelings, and memories affect your behavior. We’ll help you gain insight and self-awareness, allowing you to develop healthy coping techniques to achieve your goals
Attachment Theory
Attachment theory focuses on how your early experiences, especially in childhood, shape the way you form emotional connections with others throughout your life. During our trauma therapy sessions, we may explore your responses to a traumatic event to help us understand your attachment patterns.
When you have a better understanding of your attachment style, we can take the necessary steps to help you:
feel safe in your body
trust in your choices and intuition
respond rather than react
set healthy boundaries
Brainspotting in Indianapolis
This evidence-based type of trauma therapy is a little different than typical talk therapies and requires special training, which some of our trauma therapists have. Brainspotting focuses on pinpointing the “brainspots” in your mind where you unintentionally store traumatic memories and helps you process the feelings that arise when you find them.
Like eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), brainspotting involves helping you find an eye position that connects with these brainspots. Once found, you’ll work with your trauma therapist to reprocess the event in a safe and secure space.
What You’ll Gain From Trauma Therapy
Whether your treatment plan involves psychodynamic therapy, attachment theory, or brainspotting, our goal is to help you feel safe, in control, and empowered. Counseling for trauma can help you:
feel more confident in yourself

set healthy boundaries in all aspects of your life
regain control of your body and emotions
